The Asthma Program was run collaboration with USQ. It has now finished. This program used innovative material, including singing and didgeridoo playing to complement good medical care, to improve health outcomes for people with Asthma. Asthma is a chronic disease affecting an estimated 15% of Australian children and 11% of adults. The incidence of asthma is higher in Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander populations. The playing of musical instruments or singing has been shown to be effective in the management of asthma. This project aimed to test whether incorporating music lessons and associated breathing exercises can support asthma management in Indigenous children, teenagers and adults in Toowoomba. The results were very positive. Click for more information about the Centre for Rural & Remote Area Health. |
